7 Best Places to Eat in Chinatown, Sydney

There’s an endless list of places to eat in Sydney’s Chinatown area, so where should you choose? Here’s a list of our top restaurants picks in the Haymarket and Darling Square precincts!

1. Mamak

Classic Malaysian flavours and mouth-watering roti are the stars of the show here at Mamak. Not only is the food delicious, it’s affordable too! You can read our full review of Mamak here.

Traditional Malaysian flavours with tasty sides and awesome dishes. Not to mention the same metal plates you will find in popular lunch spots all across malaysia.

2. Gumshara

One of the heavyweights on the Sydney Ramen scene, Gumshara is the prefect option for when you feel like chowing down on a hearty meal. Don’t let its unassuming location in a basement foodcourt fool you, this place is the real deal when it comes to thick and rich ramen broth. The crowd favourite here is the tonkostu ramen with pork rib, which is equal parts heavy and delicious.

3. Marrickville Pork Roll

The famous Marrickville Pork Roll has recently brought their classic banh mi to Chinatown, and their new location is every part as good as the original. Stop by and grab a delicious Vietnamese roll while you stroll through the bustling Darling Square precinct.

4. Tan Viet

In the past you’d need to travel to Cabramatta for a taste of Tan Viet, but thankfully they’ve recently opened an outpost in Chinatown! Tan Viet’s Darling Square’s location serves up their famous Vietnamese noodle soup and crispy chicken, with all the charm and hospitality of their original restaurant.

Delicious tasting and hearty, Tan Viet has a signature bone broth soup that revitalises and satisfies.

5. Mr Bao Buns

Situated in Chinatown’s Darling Square Lobrary building, Mr Bao Buns delivers a contemporary take on the Chinese classic steamed bun. With Pillowy buns and tasty toppings like chicken karaage and pork belly, Mr Bao Buns is a great option if you’re in the market for finger food with a wow factor.

6. Chicken V

Korean Fried Chicken is always a good idea, and when you’re ready for that idea to come to fruition head to Chicken V in Chinatown. Crispy and juicy without being oily at all, our favourite fried chicken flavours here are the soy seasoning and honey butter. The plates are great for sharing over a few bottles of soju, and they’re open until late.

7. Shortstop Coffee and Donuts

Fancy a delicious handheld Dessert whilst you trapse around Sydney's Chinatown? Make a beeline for Shortstop Coffee and Donuts in Haymarket. There's certainly nothing boring about the flavour combinations on offer here at Shortstop, with everything from Mexican hot chocolate to cinnamon snickerdoodle. The flavours on offer are continously changing, which means there's something new to try with each visit.
